World Down's Syndrome Day 2011 – March 20th
The Rotaract District 3220 with the Kosala Dullewa Foundation

World Down Syndrome Day started on the 21st of March 2006 by Down Syndrome International (DSI), is a day to spread awareness of Down syndrome throughout the world and to honor Dr. Lejeune the physician who discovered the chromosomal basis for this disorder. The date was selected by Down Syndrome International to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome and is used synonymously with Down syndrome. The original idea was proposed by Stylianos E. Antonarakis, a medical geneticist of the University of Geneva Medical School.

The annual observance of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) aims to promote awareness and understanding of Down syndrome and related issues: and to mobilize support and recognition of the dignity, rights and well being of persons with Down syndrome.
Past WDSD activities have had a tremendous impact, as it showcases the abilities, talents and accomplishments of persons with Down syndrome. Celebrating WDSD proactively has empowered persons with Down syndrome and their communities globally. Many have partnered and engaged with civil society & youth with positive outcomes.

The Kosala Dullewa Foundation was the first association to organize a Down Syndrome Day Celebration in Sri Lanka in the year 2007. The commemoration was a full day event which consisted of three main projects. A walk which was able to attract nearly 1000 participant, a health clinic for the children with special needs and a variety show which was staged by the children from the Kosala Dullewa Foundation. The event was a great success as it was able to draw participants from far as Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, Batticlo etc. The enthusiasm of parents and care-givers of these children and the interest of the children to participate in the activities that were lined up for them was quite amazing. This enthusiasm has led the trustees of KDF to make the commemoration of the WDSD an annual event.

In order to commemorate the World Down Syndrome Day for the year 2011 the Kosala Dullewa Foundation will join hands with the Rotaract District 3220 on Sunday 20th of March 2011 at Royal College, Colombo.
